Master's Programmes

What is a Master's degree programme?

Master's degree programmes are graduated studies. That means, you have completed an undergraduate degree to qualify, for example a  Bachelor's degree programme.

Depending on the programme, the University of Bayreuth (UBT) awards the following Master's degrees: Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Education (M.Ed.). As a rule, students with Master's degrees are entitled to pursue a doctorate

If you have completed your studies outside of Germany and would now like to know what options you have with your degree with respect to Master's degree programmes in Germany, the anabin-database can provide orientation.

What Master's degree programmes are offered at the University of Bayreuth?

A Master's programme can build on an undergraduate degree or it can be used to pursue a new field of study. In either case, these are referred to as consecutive Master's programmes.

Some of our master's programmes are interdisciplinary in nature and, thanks to several different elective areas, are open to applicants from a variety of disciplines. However, depending on the “track,” the programme is based on certain prior knowledge that must be demonstrated in the Bachelor's degree.

Other Master's programmes are particularly aimed at prospective students with professional experience. These are offered as continuing education master’s programmes.

CONSECUTIVE MASTER'S PROGRAMMES

  • These programmes build directly on a suitable Bachelor's degree programme and expand or deepen the knowledge acquired there.
  • In most cases, students can enrol in the programme immediately after completing their Bachelor's degree.
  • There is a clear academic connection between the Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

CONTINUING EDUCATION MASTER'S PROGRAMMES

  • The admission requirement is usually a qualified professional activity, generally for at least one year.
  • The content is practice-oriented and often serves the purpose of professional specialization or advancement.
  • These programmes are organized to be completed alongside work and are subject to a fee.
  • The contact for this is the Campus-Akademie.
  • The University of Bayreuth also offers double degree programmes. Double degree programmes give you the opportunity to receive a degree from both University of Bayreuth and one of its partner universities. More detailed information on the respective double degree programmes can be found on the pages of the International Office.

Aptitude test for Master's programmes

Admission to many master's degree programmes at the University of Bayreuth is regulated by an aptitude test. Applicants are assessed to determine whether they meet the necessary academic requirements for a Master's degree programme. Depending on the degree programme, this is done by evaluating the application documents and, if necessary, conducting a selection interview or an online test. Passing the aptitude test is a prerequisite for admission to a Master's degree programme.

You can find more details on the specific documents and criteria in the respective examination and study regulations.

Here you will find an overview of the Master's programmes with aptitude tests.

Application process for Master's programmes

To obtain a place on a Master's programme, you must submit an application. The exact requirements may vary depending on the programme. Most Master's programmes build on the content of specific bachelor's programs. You can find more detailed information on this in the respective examination and study regulations under the admission requirements. Degrees from other universities are assessed for comparability during the application process; if necessary, missing content can be made up to a limited extent at the beginning of the programme by fulfilling certain requirements.

It is also possible to apply before you have received your Bachelor's degree certificate. In this case, you must submit the certificate within a specified period of time.

Frequently asked questions:

Can I be admitted with an external bachelor's degree?Hide

Can I be admitted with an external bachelor's degree?
Yes, if the admission requirements specified in the relevant examination and study regulations are met. The current examination and study regulations for the master's programs can be found via this link. An important criterion for admission with an external bachelor's degree is equivalence. The examination board is responsible for determining the equivalence of the completed bachelor's degree with the degree programs specified in the examination and study regulations, and this is checked as part of the application process.

What is meant by equivalence?Hide

What is meant by equivalence?
The equivalence assessment determines whether your submitted bachelor's degree differs significantly from the bachelor's degrees offered by the University of Bayreuth as specified in the study and examination regulations. Significant differences exist if the examination board concludes that the basis for successful master's study is insufficient.
Equivalence is only checked definitively as part of the application process, so it is not possible to provide any information in advance.

Can I apply without a degree certificate?Hide

Can I apply without a degree certificate?
Yes, the examination and study regulations stipulate that it is possible to apply before completing your previous degree. They also specify the minimum number of credits from your bachelor's degree that must be proven at the time of application.

When and how will I be notified of my admission?Hide

When and how will I be notified of my admission?
Once the formal and academic admission requirements for your application have been checked and met, you will receive an email notification that your admission letter is available for download in your applicant account. You can then access it by clicking on the “Decision” button.

It is in the interest of the University of Bayreuth to issue notifications as soon as possible.

When do I have to accept my admission?Hide

When do I have to accept my admission?
If the letter of admission does not specify a deadline for accepting the study place, the following applies: You must accept the study place in good time so that you can then enroll by the enrollment deadline. You should allow at least 1 to 2 weeks for this.

Accepting the study place does not oblige you to take up your studies. However, it does give you direct access to information about enrollment.

If, contrary to expectations, you are unable to take up your studies, please contact us. (masterbuero@uni-bayreuth.de).

I have been admitted but have not enrolled - does my admission also apply to subsequent semesters?Hide

I have been admitted but have not enrolled - does my admission also apply to subsequent semesters?
For master's programs without admission restrictions, admission remains valid without restriction, provided that the admission requirements have not changed so significantly that re-admission would not be possible.

Admissions granted as part of an aptitude assessment process are valid for all subsequent applications to this degree program, provided that the content and objectives of the degree program have not changed so significantly that aptitude for this degree program can no longer be demonstrated on the basis of the aptitude assessment process carried out at an earlier date.

How can I transfer my admission to a subsequent semester?Hide

How can I transfer my admission to a subsequent semester?
