FAQ – Allgemeine Informationen

Where are the machines?Hide

There are several types of machines in use, which vary in their function. In the following, the various uses and operating modes are explained. If you click on the image, you will see a map of the Campus with all the machines.

Top-up stations

The electronic wallet contained in the Campus-Card can be topped-up at any of the installed top-up machines. These accept 5, 10, 20 and 50 Euro notes. Topping up to a maximum of 650.- Euro is possible. There are top-up machines at the following locations:

  • In the Central Administration building, to the right of the Student Administration Office
  • The Natural Sciences I building, near the Office of the Dean
  • The Natural Sciences II building, in the entrance area of the IT Service Centre
  • The University Library, in the entrance on the right
  • The RW (Law) building, in the departmental library
  • The FAN-B building (near the FAN coffee bar)
  • Campus Kulmbach: The "Alte Spinnerei" building, 2nd floor, foyer (near the library)

Validation stations (re-enrolment, updating validity):

Validation is necessary after every successful enrolment, as well as every successful re-enrolment. This can be performed at any of the validation stations installed. The variable data, especially the validity of the Campus-Card, will be updated. Validation erases the information stripe (TRW stripe) and rewrites it with the current date of validity. The date of validity is also updated on the chip. In the validation process, it is important to ensure that the card is inserted into the slit of the validation printer in the way shown on the display. It is also important not to remove the card from the machine by force, before completion of the process. Validation stations can be found

  • In the Central Administration building, to the right of the Student Administration Office
  • In the foyer of the University Library
  • Campus Kulmbach: The "Alte Spinnerei" building, 2nd floor, foyer (near the library)

Library fees system

Information on the Library fees system (BGS) can be found on the webpage of the Library

My Campus-Card has expired. What happens to the sum of money topped up? Hide

The expired date of validity only prevents further topping up of the Card, but the remaining sum can still be spent without any problems. The remaining balance will normally only be paid out at the end of semester (not at the end of lectures) after completed de-registration. Payment is possible from Tue to Thu, between 9:30 am and 12 pm in the ZUV building, Level 3, Room  3.22, from Herr Sehr. Even after de-registration, any remaining sum can still be used up.

How should I store my Campus-Card? Hide

The chip card should be carefully looked after, so that neither the external, visible details nor the technical functions of the microchip are damaged. Avoid the following:

  • Bending the Campus-Card (risks breaking contacts or antenna)
  • Any permanent curvature (affects writing of data onto the TRW stripe during validation)
  • Action of chemicals (e.g. washing or contact with other liquids)
  • High temperatures (e.g. In vehicles)
  • Heavy soiling

In general, it is recommended you store your Card in a hard card protector. If the chip card is rendered unusable by improper handling, students must have a new chip card issued at their own cost. The current prices (presently 20 Euro) can be found on the noticeboard at the Student Administration Office.

Where do I get my UBT-Campus-CardHide

For students:

The UBT-Campus-Card is handed out at the Student Administration Office upon enrolment. A passport photograph is necessary for the issuing of the chip card. The first issuing of the UBT-Campus-Card is free. On receiving the UBT-Campus-Card, please check the data printed on the UBT-Campus-Card for correctness. Please report any mistakes to the Student Administration Office immediately.

Please remember to re-validate your UBT-Campus-Card at a validation station every semester after re-enrolment. Here, the new semester will be printed on your card.

For staff members:
All full-time employees and emeriti receive a Campus-Card. Part-time employees (eg. student assistants) do not receive a Campus-Card. If you are not employed by the University of Bayreuth but still require a Campus-Card for you scientific work, have this confirmed by your chair using the form "Application for Campus-Card for non-employees". Send the completed form to ITS NWII.

Cards for employees are produced by ITS. For their issuing, a passport photograph and the following data are necessary: Surname, first name, chair / organisational unit, and (if known) organisational unit number. The application is lodged informally.
If you have a digital passport photograph, the application can be sent by E-Mail: chipkarte@uni-bayreuth.de
Otherwise, please send you passport photograph by internal mail to: ITS NWII

On receipt, please check the data printed on the Card. Please report any mistakes to ITS immediately. The first issuing of the Campus-Card is free.
The charge for issuing a replacement ID Card is 20 Euro.

For a new employment agreement: After contract extension has been finalized, please seek out a validation station. There the up-dated information will be printed on the card.

I am not entitled to a Campus-Card. So what can I do to access services provided by the University?Hide

If a Campus-Card cannot be issued to you, you can do the following:

  • Library: Have a so-called “Stadtbenutzerausweis” (local user ID card) issued to you.
If the limited borrowing privileges of this ID card do not correspond to your status, your departmental library can assign your ID card to a specific “Group” to adapt your borrowing privileges. Please bring written confirmation from your Chair to the departmental library to evidence your status.
  • Money card function (store room requirements, private copies, …): The "Stadtbenutzerausweis” (local user ID card) is also a money card. You can pay at the top-up machines and then, e.g. use the copiers.
  • Cost centre card: If you are permitted to use the copier for work purposes, the Chair can apply for a “cost centre card” for you with Frau Heling (Ref. IV).
  • University Sport: Please see the colleagues at University Sport at the Department of Sport Science.
I have lost my Card. What should I do? Hide

If a UBT-Campus-Card is lost through carelessness or theft, blocking of this chip card should be requested immediately by E-Mail at chipkarte@uni-bayreuth.de

The Card will remain blocked until an application for unblocking is received, meaning there will be no possibility to use the Card on any of the machines of the University of Bayreuth. From the time of the Card’s blocking (as a rule, one working day after reporting it lost), the electronic wallet can no longer be accessed either.

If there was a cash balance on the lost chip card, this amount can be determined and transferred to the new Card. These transfers are carried out by:

  • Kai Sehr, payment office, Tel. 0921 / 55-5326
Where do I get a new Card?Hide

For students, the re-issuing of a Card in cases of loss or damage through negligence is handled by the Student Administration Office. For this purpose, a personal ID card or passport, an enrolment certificate and a passport photograph are required.  The current prices for the re-issuing of a chip card (currently 20 Euro) can be found on the noticeboard at the Student Administration Office.

Employees receive new ID cards form the IT Service Centre AS1.

I have just found a UBT-Campus-Card. Where can I hand it in?Hide

Found student ID cards should be handed in to the Student Administration Office as quickly as possible. Found employee ID cards can be handed in at the IT Service Centre. IT Service Centre staff will subsequently inform the cardholder.

I have found my lost UBT-Campus-Card. How can I unblock it? Hide

Cards can only be unblocked when an application is lodged by a person authorized to do so. With personalized cards, this is the person whose name appears printed on the card. The easiest way to do this is to go to the competent office (Student Administration Office or IT Service Centre) in person. The authorized person will be identified by passport photograph. Students can also lodge an application by E-mail from their University webmail account, as they identify themselves as authorized by logging in personally.

Copying with the Campus-Card doesn’t work, terminals indicate error 448 (erase key). What do I do? Hide

The cause of this error is the fact that for every topping-up or paying transaction, the Card is first electronically blocked, then the value of the Card is changed, and when this has been completed, the Card is unblocked. If this process is interrupted because the card was removed from the reading device, or the device is malfunctioning, the blocking of the card is not lifted.

All functions to do with payment, and also validation of the Card, are no longer possible.

Solution:
To lift the blocking of the Card, it must be reconnected with the device that put the blocking in place. Usually, it is the device in which the Card last worked - not the device on which the error was noted. If the device in which the card was blocked cannot be determined, the station code can be read be inserting the Card into a copying terminal. The display should show the following:

Fehler 448
N5: 13/30

The number 13 names the device, and the number 30 the type of device (here: copying terminal). Because these errors usually occur at copying terminals (device type No. 30), the following list shows these, together with their respective locations:

N5-No.

FAQ – Security

Is my data protected?Hide

The Campus-Card and its contents, as well as the data arising during card use, are subject to the provisions of the Bavarian Data Protection Act. In particular, no personal usage profiles may be generated. This is not possible, anyway, because in making use of the functions of the Card, no personal data is stored, but only the Card’s number. Data is deleted within the set periods. As a chip card owner, your contact regarding questions of data protection is the data protection officer (DSB) of the University of Bayreuth, Herr T. Frahnert (ORR), Tel. 0921 / 55-5335.

What personal data is stored on the MIFARE chip? Hide

There is no personal data stored on the chip card. On the basis of one code digit, it is only possible to distinguish the card tape (e.g. student ID card, staff ID card or cost centre card). On personalized Cards, the name is only printed onto the Card, but not stored on the chip itself. The chip contains 26 numerical data fields containing inter alia the chip series number, and the beginning and end of the Card’s period of validity.

Is there a possibility of Card misuse?Hide

The risk of misuse of the UBT-Campus-Card is extremely low. For one thing, there is a picture of the owner on the Card, and for another, because of its security technology (AES encryption), the card cannot be duplicated. Even in cases of loss or theft, the Card can only be misused until an application to block the Card is submitted and this has been carried out. It is therefore extremely important to take good care of your Card, and in case of loss or theft to give immediate notification via the web or by E-mail. Heeding these provisos means the risk of misuse is relatively low.

What improvements have been made in comparison to the MIFARE-classic chip, which was hacked shortly before the planned introduction? Hide

After the University Governing Board unanimously resolved not to introduce the encrypted card MIFARE-classic, it was decided that a card with a symmetrical cryptosystem in AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) technology would be used. This system is internationally recognized and certified by NIST. The University settled on implementing the Mifare DESfire8 card, currently boasting the best security standard, especially in the interest of students and staff of the University.

Can a third party gain access to my stored data? Hide

No. Each data field - with the exception of the card serial number - is secured for read and write operations by a secret key, and the data transfer from and to the card reader takes place in encrypted form. Furthermore, a suitable card reader would have to come within 10 cm of the Card, depending on the antenna geometry.
